These versatile shawls derived from the special breeds of goats, with its breathability and microclimatic properties are suitable for all seasons. They are adaptive to both colder and warm summer weather conditions. However it is paramount that the shawls are taken care of correctly.
The 2 best ways to care for your shawls are:
- A) Dry cleaning
Choose a reputable dry cleaners or use the correct method at home by using the right cleaning products. Visit www.thewoolcompany.co.uk - B) Hand wash (Never use hot water)
If using this method extra attention should be given at all stages. Avoid washing it in a hurried state, for example; trying to wash it just before you need to wear it.
Take a sufficient amount of lukewarm water to submerge the whole shawl in a bowl. Add the recommended mild detergent; see website above or a very mild shampoo, place the shawl and gently agitate with your hands for 10 – 15 mins, if necessary, to cover the whole surface of the shawl. Do not leave it for a long period of soaking.
Drain the water and gently pressing and patting dry with a clean towel, laying it on a flat surface – preferably on a cotton sheet to absorb the residual water. Once placed, then adjust it to its original shape and leave it to dry, keeping it away from open fire and direct sunlight.
What are the Do’s and Don’ts
Do’s
Though generally dry cleaning your Pashmina is advised, you can hand washed with very a mild shampoo or the recommended product for hand washing.
Only using your hand gently agitate the material between your hands taking real care. Let it dry naturally placed on a dry cotton cloth or towel on a flat surface.
Always store your shawl separately, flat in a dust bag, wrapped up in a non chemical tissue paper or use natural oils placed in a pouch along with the storage to keep moths away.
Product care
Brush or shake after every wear before storing it away.
Check on your shawl – open every few months from its storage as this keeps it fresh. It can be ironed on very light heat placed under a cloth.
Don’ts
Never wash your Pashmina in a washing machine, though some other wool garments can be washed in machines it is NOT recommended for Pashmina.
The second most important is, never use HOT water even if you are using a glove, check that the water is only lukewarm, as recommended.
While hand washing, do not twist, squash or wring the material as the fibres will move and misshapen.
While the shawl is wet it is likely to stretch, and given the nature of the fibre it should never be hung on a hanger at any time.
Always avoid drying in direct sunlight of near open fire.
Never use chemical moth balls like Naphthalene balls as they could damage the fibres.
Do not wrap up in newspaper as the chemical ink would react and affect the fibres.
The shawl should be completely dry – never store it away while damp, in cases of cold conditions.
Avoid storing directly in a plastic bag or box.
Never iron directly, only when placed under a cloth.
When using perfumes do not spray directly on the shawls.
